FEEDING THE FUTURE

When severe economic crisis hit Sri Lanka in 2022, hundreds of thousands of children were going hungry. Immediately we knew we had to do something to give back to the island that had given so much to us.

When hunger keeps a child out of school, all too often they grow up to be a teenager who did not learn and an adult who remains impoverished.

Working with our partner, the Hemas Outreach Foundation, we meet the nutritional needs of pre-school children and their families in the poorest districts of Sri Lanka, so the children can stay in school and realise a bright future. Right now, we’re supporting over 1,000 families.

Over the last two years, it’s become increasingly clear that the challenge facing Sri Lankan children is not simply a lack of nutrition, it’s also a lack of schools.

So we decided to build them and, in November 2023, opened our first Hoppers pre-school in the remote village of Poojapitiya.

The first school was a tremendous milestone for everyone at Hoppers. But now our goal is to be able to open and support at least two schools a year. We’ve just laid the foundations for the second Hoppers pre-school in the village of Akurana, coming May 2024.

These initiatives fund the construction of new schools, each school is staffed and operated by the local council. Our initiatives continue to raise funds to feed the students on an ongoing basis.

-In 2022-
we raised £90,097
supporting 367 children
across 15 pre-schools in 6 district
distributing 1,835 ration packs 

-In 2023-
we’ve raised £202,101 to date
supporting 1160 children
across 34 pre-schools in 11 district
distributing 4,392 protein packs 

We are currently in the process of building a second pre-school in the village of Akurana  that will school 55 young children.

We’ve setup a dedicated charity page where you can donate directly to help feed a family of 4 or supplement a child’s pre-school education with a school pack of essentials including books, pens, pencils, a school bag, water bottle & lunch box.

We keep administrative costs close to zero by partnering with the Hemas Outreach Foundation, and purchase food at wholesale rates via Cargills, one of Sri Lanka’s largest retailers – which also handles the logistics of delivering food to villages.
